SWRK 680 : Severe Mental Illnesses
This course focuses on and extensive overview of treatment issues for individuals with severe and persistent mental disorders specifically withing the Quebec context. Topics covered will include conceptual framework, existing systems and modalities, issues impeding treatment, case management, community support, cultural issues, gender issues, dual diagnosis (mental illness and substance abuse), impact of homelessness, suicide, violence, sexual abuse history, personality/behaviour disorders. In addition to the exploration of client needs and concerns, consideration will be given to the role of the helping professional. Teaching modalities will include lecture, guest speakers, videos and discussion. Student will be encouraged to participate actively and to intergrate theory and practice thought the describes assignments.
